| The
International Center is a non-profit community based organization. Our programs
are based on the idea that both the international community in greater New
Haven and the local community can benefit from each other. Our goal is to
create a welcoming and supportive environment for the international population
in the area and to foster a greater understanding of the wealth and variety
of cultures the world has to offer. Every
year, more than 2,000 international students and scholars come to live
in the New Haven area, bringing with them their ideas, cultures, languages
and customs, which are often very different from the American way of life
and from one another’s.
The International
Center does its best to assist in creating a new sense of "home"
for this international population. Our relationship with visitors starts
even before they leave their home countries - we send information about
New Haven and the Center and answer any questions they may have. We then
act as a welcoming committee when they arrive and provide a support network
in New Haven. We help in a variety of areas: finding places to live, stores,
restaurants, and schools, and providing quality English instruction, social
activities and even volunteer work opportunities. Part of our strategy
is to bring people together to get to know each other. We organize lectures,
trips, picnics, and special events as well as English as a Second Language
(ESL) classes. The following are short descriptions of the various programs
the International Center has to offer.
